OSINT Toolkit

“Everyone should be Prepared, and no one should be excluded.”

C⁴ OSINT Toolkit

Open Source Intelligence tools, methodologies, and resources for verifying information, analyzing digital media, and monitoring events.

Comprehensive OSINT Directories

Freely accessible, English-language tools and libraries used by analysts, journalists, and researchers.

  • OSINT Framework: osintframework.com
    • What it is: The foundational web-based directory for open-source intelligence.
    • Best for: It organizes hundreds of free tools into a visual, clickable tree categorized by the type of data you need to find (e.g., email addresses, domain records, dark web forums, IP addresses).
  • Bellingcat's Online Investigation Toolkit: bellingcat.gitbook.io/toolkit
    • What it is: A massive, frequently updated toolkit maintained by the world's premier independent digital investigative collective.
    • Best for: Finding the exact, current tools used by professional journalists for facial recognition, deepfake detection, social media archiving, and mapping.

Verification Tools

Identify manipulation, confirm dates, and verify original sources of media.

  • Reverse Image Search: Cross-reference images across search index databases using Google Lens, TinEye, and Yandex Images.
  • InVID / WeVerify: invid-project.eu
    • What it is: A powerful, free browser extension built specifically for journalists and fact-checkers.
    • Best for: Debunking viral media. It allows you to fragment videos into keyframes for reverse image searching, analyze file metadata, and apply forensic filters to detect image manipulation.
  • Metadata Extraction: Inspect EXIF metadata (camera details, coordinates, timestamps) using tools like Jimpl or offline command line programs like ExifTool.
  • Archiving Tools: Save static snapshots of active web pages or social media posts using Wayback Machine and Archive.today.

Geolocating Resources

Pinpoint exact locations of images or videos by analyzing environmental markers.

  • Interactive Maps: Navigate topography, street layouts, and landmarks with Google Earth Pro, OpenStreetMap, and community-sourced maps on Wikimapia.
  • Chrono-location: Calculate time of day or calendar date using shadow direction/length via SunCalc or Shadow Calculator.
  • Environmental Clues: Identify architectural styles, road sign designs, utility pole patterns, flora/fauna distribution, and vehicle registration plates.
  • GeoHints: geohints.com
    • What it is: An incredible visual cheat sheet for pinpointing where a photo was taken.
    • Best for: It catalogs highly specific global infrastructure details by country—such as the exact design of utility poles, street signs, license plates, taxi colors, and road markings.

Flight & Marine Tracking

Monitor the movements of aircraft and maritime vessels worldwide in real time.

  • ADS-B Exchange: globe.adsbexchange.com
    • What it is: An unfiltered, community-driven global flight tracking map.
    • Best for: Unlike commercial trackers (like Flightradar24) which comply with censorship requests, ADS-B Exchange does not block military aircraft, police helicopters, or private jets (like Elon Musk's or Taylor Swift's) that have requested anonymity.
  • MarineTraffic: marinetraffic.com
    • What it is: The global standard for maritime tracking.
    • Best for: The free tier allows you to view the real-time positions, speed, and heading of commercial vessels, cargo ships, and large yachts worldwide using the Automatic Identification System (AIS).
  • Historical Data: Look up tail numbers, registration details, ship dimensions, and cargo configurations.

Social Media Analysis

Conduct targeted searches, identify networks, and trace digital profiles across platform boundaries.

  • Advanced Search: Utilize platform-specific operators (e.g. Google Dorks: site:twitter.com "search term", `from:username`) to filter noise.
  • Profile Finding: Locate user accounts across hundreds of services using username searches like WhatsMyName or Namechk.
  • Audience Analysis: Understand network graphs, bot patterns, and engagement metrics via public scraping or academic monitoring tools.

Satellite Imagery

Review satellite maps to monitor infrastructure changes, active fires, floods, and geographic features.

  • Sentinel Hub EO Browser: apps.sentinel-hub.com/eo-browser
    • What it is: An open-source web application providing access to satellite imagery archives (including the ESA Sentinel and NASA Landsat missions).
    • Best for: Finding recent, free satellite imagery of almost anywhere on Earth, updated every few days. It is essential for monitoring natural disasters, troop movements, or environmental changes.
  • Google Earth Pro Desktop: google.com/earth/about/versions/
    • What it is: The downloadable desktop client of Google Earth.
    • Best for: The "Historical Imagery" slider. While the web version is great, the desktop client is mandatory for OSINT because it allows you to slide back in time to see exactly how a specific location, building, or landscape has changed over years or decades.
  • NASA Worldview: Access daily near-real-time satellite imagery showing active global events at NASA Worldview.

Media Literacy Basics

Employ rigorous checklists to evaluate claims and assess the reliability of news reports.

  • Who is the publisher? Check credentials, editorial histories, and ownership transparently.
  • What is the evidence? Differentiate eyewitness video, official statements, anonymous leaks, and pure speculation.
  • When was it published? Confirm the timing to prevent "out-of-context" recycling of historical media.
  • Why was it created? Consider the intent—informing, selling, persuading, or misleading.
